At Civic Gateway we saw municipalities with websites in need of some serious TLC. Some great villages, towns and cities have websites that look shoody, perform poorly or simply don't exist.

And we decided to do something about it.

We did some research

We looked into it a little and realized most municipalities were looking for the same thing:

1. Something easy to use.
2. Something easy to find.
3. It communicates the values and ideals of our community.
4. It posts news.
5. It posts events.
6. It profiles our officials.

We came up with an answer.

Provide affordable solutions based around a rock-solid technology that lets municipalities inform and educate their citizens

Our system would have to:

1. Be cheap and easy to maintain.
2. Put the power of content creation in the municipalities' hands.
3. Get the basics down to a science.
4. Offer easy, fast expansion to serve needs as they grew.

We got to work

We picked a technology, we settled on using the CMS, Drupal. It's built on open-source technology, which is a fancy way of saying that an entire community contributes to the development of the software (natch!).

Drupal does lots of stuff, but these are the features it realy excells at:

1. Super easy to use.
2. Great SEO (Search Engine Optimization), so people can actually find you through Google!
3. Exceedingly flexible, with hundreds of different, stable modules

For the rest we had to work to optimized the system. Making sure to build and test for multiple scenarios of what a city might want. We found and installed the appropriate modules for everything from displaying a calendar to sending newsletters. You can see a list of all the options here

What all this means
